Our turn of the century Victorian mansion, the Eveleth-Crafts-Sheridan Historical
House, and its associated Carriage House contain a wide array of permanent
and temporary exhibits, ranging from the Civil War to post World War II, relating
to the history and culture of the Moosehead Lake region. Major displays throughout
the mansion change annually and depict a different and distinctive period theme.
For the 2006 season, the theme will be “Life’s Special Moments” and
will offer visitors a glimpse of early wedding and anniversary displays, school
days, typical family outings, and a patriotic display entitled “Answering
The Call” which will include World War I and World War II artifacts.
The renovated Carriage House now contains our Lumberman's Museum offering
a retrospective of logging in the 1800s, Native American artifact exhibits,
an extensive display of hand-crafted models depicting the steam vessels which
once plied the waters of Moosehead Lake, vintage photographic exhibits, library,
gift shop, administrative offices, and artifact storage facilities.
Centerpiece of the lawns is the sunken garden located on what was once an old barn foundation. It’s a pleasant place to enjoy a quiet pause, or a picnic lunch. It also offers a wonderful backdrop for family photographs, weddings or other special events.
At regular intervals during the summer, we also offer “Living History” presentations
by local authors, historians and residents discussing subjects from long-past
logging and river drive activities, 19th and early 20th century railroad and
lake boat transportation, early hotels and sporting camps, and local Native
American culture among others.
