History All Around Us: The Courage and Commitment of Mainers in the Civil War

Across Maine, quiet places hold powerful stories—reminders of the brave men and women who shaped our state’s role in the Civil War. From a crumbling foundation deep in the Albion woods to a lone uniform displayed in Monson, and a secluded lodge on an island in Casco Bay, each site speaks to the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of Mainers during one of our nation’s most pivotal conflicts. This presentation explores Maine’s Civil War story by visiting five historic locations, shedding light on the legacy that still surrounds us.

About the Presenter:

Scott Settlemire has spent the last 45 years immersed in Civil War history, drawing from original letters, diaries, and unit records to understand the lived experiences of soldiers on the front lines. He’s visited most of the major battlefields, including Gettysburg, where many Mainers served at pivotal moments in the fight. In this presentation, Scott shares the words of Maine soldiers themselves—offering firsthand accounts of courage, hardship, and sacrifice during one of the defining battles in American history. Photographs and maps help connect these deeply personal stories to the broader events of the war. Scott is a chemical engineer by training. He grew up in Maine and got his start at the Rumford paper mill. He is married to Candy Ayer, daughter of Nancy Ayer of Rockwood.
